Types of Courier Services

There are many different kinds of courier services.  Many of these courier services are directly targeted toward business customers, but almost all of them are available for the non-business customer to use as well.

Same Day Couriers

Same day couriers are used by many business customers to run documents and items from one location to the next.  The largest limitation of using same day couriers is that the delivery location must be reachable geographically.

However, this limitation may, at times, be only a limitation if the customer is not willing to pay for airline fares, etc, that may be incurred in reaching the desired destination.  For example, if you need a document or product delivered from London to Los Angeles within 24 hours, it will be necessary to pay for express airfare to ensure delivery.  Even in the case of wanting an item delivered on the same continent, it may be necessary to pay for express airfare – if you want a package delivered from Los Angeles to Seattle, you may have to pay for express airfare to ensure it will be delivered within 24 hours.

In some cases, same day couriers will drive or even rail-ship packages or documents if it is more cost effective to arrange a delivery in this fashion.

Next Day Couriers

In many cases, a courier service will make next day delivery service available.  Since same day delivery is extremely expensive, many customers will opt for next day courier service.  In this case, the courier guarantees that the package will be delivered no more than 36 hours from the time the customer dropped the package off to the courier service or it was picked up by the delivery service.

In some cases, the courier service will offer the option of a guaranteed delivery by a particular hour of the day – for example, by 10 a.m., 3 p.m. or some other time.

Overnight Couriers

Overnight courier service is very similar to next day delivery service.  The courier will guarantee that the package or document will be delivered by a particular time of day, the next day, usually in the morning.

Using Courier Services

With most popular courier services, you can simply call the delivery service and they will pick-up your document or package and delivery it to its destination.  However, you should make sure to ask about how they require payment.  In some cases, you will need to fill out a Bill of Lading or a form that indicates your information and the information about the delivery location.  You will also be required to provide payment information if you do not already have a billing account arranged.

One option is to drop off your package to a delivery service directly.  Larger courier services usually have offices located in almost every town and city in the United States.

There are some delivery services that target specific industries.  For example, there are delivery services that market and provide services for the real estate industry, including delivery of escrow documents, property offers, loan documents and other documents that are time sensitive and need delivery by specific dates and times in order to complete a transaction.
